Welcome to the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Appalachian State University. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is a 60-hour CACREP accredited degree that is a challenging, yet embracing environment for professional counselor preparation.
The mission of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is to develop a community of practice that will support graduate students enrolled in Counseling, Family Therapy, and Higher Education courses to move from novice towards entry level mental health practitioners through the process of socially meaningful activities that develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become effective, ethical and competent counselors with diverse clients across the human spectrum.
In addition, graduate certificates are available in Expressive Arts Therapy and Addictions Counseling.

- The Agency Counseling (now Clinical Mental Health Counseling) program was established in 1974. In 2024, CMHC will celebrate its 50th year admitting students!
- Students in the CMHC program have the opportunity to complete one of the only graduate certificates in Expressive Arts Therapy offered throughout the country.
- The App State CMHC program won the Outstanding Master’s Counselor Education and Supervision Program Award in 2019 given by the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision!
